Hi, I’m Marja

That’s pronounced Maaria.

I’m the director of Clearlingo, and an experienced editor, proofreader and plain language consultant. I help businesses, government and not-for-profit organisations, publishers and authors turn complex writing into clear, polished and reader-friendly content.

I know that writing is personal. It represents you, your organisation and your work, so choosing an editor requires trust. My job is to be a safe pair of hands – bringing an experienced, independent eye to your writing while respecting your expertise, purpose and voice.

Before moving into editing, I worked as a speech and language therapist and as a marketing assistant. Both roles strengthened my interest in language, communication and the importance of understanding your audience.

I was born in the Netherlands and moved to New Zealand when I was four. I grew up in Wellington and completed my schooling and tertiary education here. I now live on a farm in South Canterbury with my family.

I’ve worked as an editor for many years across a wide range of subject areas and genres. I particularly enjoy helping people communicate complex ideas clearly – from corporate and government documents to websites, reports and non-fiction books.

I recognise the status of te reo Māori as an official language of Aotearoa New Zealand and as a taonga under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I have a basic knowledge of te reo Māori and continue to learn. I’m experienced in its use within English-language content, but I’m not qualified to provide translation or corrections. Where specialist advice is needed, I know when to consult an appropriately qualified te reo Māori expert.

I’m an Accredited Editor with the Institute of Professional Editors Ltd (IPEd) and an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

I’m committed to ongoing professional development and keeping my knowledge and skills up to date.
