Fiction book editing

Once your story's structure is right and you have revised it as much as you can, it is time to enhance the writing and check the details. You want to make your book the best it can be – this is where I can help.

I will work with you to make sure your writing flows, the dialogue sounds natural and is formatted correctly, the story and details are consistent and that the spelling and grammar is correct, making sure your book is ready to be sent to the publisher for layout and printing.

I recommend first copy-editing and then proofreading, but I can discuss with you what suits you and your book.

Contact me today to find out how I can help you with your book.

"Marja made clear suggestions which respected my own style of writing. I was impressed how thorough she was, especially with regards to paragraph and dialogue layout. She did a great job and was pleasant to work with." Author, science-fiction novel

What is copy-editing?

For fiction books, copy-editing is enhancing the writing so that the reader gets so immersed in the story, they forget they are reading. Any number of things can take a reader out of the story – things that don’t make sense, inconsistencies, sentences that don’t flow, characters that don’t talk like they should, factual errors, etc. This is where I can help.

Once you have the overall structure and storyline of your book as good as you can, your manuscript is ready for copy-editing (see my resources for ways of getting to this stage). Copy-editing gets into the nitty-gritty of the writing, and I will go over your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb. But don’t worry, I make sure to keep your writing true to your own style.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is correcting the spelling and grammar mistakes to ensure that there are no errors that could detract from the published work, and that the work looks polished and professional.

Proofreading is the final step before publishing and is done after all other levels of editing have been completed.

As part of this service, I also make sure your manuscript is tidy and formatted, especially if you have specific requirements for submitting your book to a publisher or printer.

What is traditional proofreading?

The traditional meaning of proofreading is to check the PDF proofs which have been designed by the printer before it goes to print. I can help with this, too. Please ask.

"It was an absolute pleasure working with Marja. Her services were very professional. My manuscript was edited and proofread to a high standard and Marja’s responses were clear and concise. I particularly liked Marja’s tight scheduling arrangements as this kept me up to speed. I am looking forward to working with Marja again and I do recommend her to anyone in need of
superior editing and proofreading skills."
Author, fantasy novel
