Hi, I'm Marja (pronounced Maaria).
I'm a professional, qualified proofreader and copy-editor. My goal is to ensure your written work is stress-free and polished. I enjoy working with clients to ensure their ideas and information are clear, consistent and compelling. My approach is to listen to a client’s needs, and provide a cost-effective and suitable option.
I have experience in editing novels, non-fiction books, memoirs, websites and business documents, and am happy to consider all genres of writing.
I am an Intermediate Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP). My qualifications include a Diploma in Editing and Proofreading from the New Zealand Institute of Business Studies, a Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Canterbury, and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in modern languages, linguistics and European studies from Victoria University. I continue to take editing courses to ensure I stay up-to-date.
Prior to my career in editing, I have worked as a speech and language therapist and a marketing assistant, areas which have enhanced my passion for grammar and the correct use of language. I love nothing more than curling up with a good book at the end of the the day – which makes proofreading and copy-editing the perfect job for me.
I am bilingual in English and Dutch, and have studied French and Russian at a tertiary level. This gives me an understanding of the unique difficulties of writing in English when it's a second language and enables me to support those who need to make their document sound natural to the English ear.
I was born in The Netherlands and immigrated to New Zealand when I was four, completing all my schooling and tertiary education here. I grew up in Wellington and now live on a farm in South Canterbury.
